The overall goal of our research is to understand the biology of human cytomegalovirus infection at the uterine-placental interface. We study specialized cell types, particularly epithelial and endothelial cells with polarized properties. Current projects investigate the routes of virus transmission and replication in the human placenta, viral pathogenesis mechanisms that impair development, and suppression of intrauterine viral and bacterial pathogens by maternal innate immunity.

The Pereira Lab is a member of the Graduate Programs in Oral and Craniofacial Sciences [OCSCI] at UCSF.
